Following the popularity of video call service Zoom and Google Meet this year, WhatsApp is now about to introduce a video feature to its desktop users.
A spokesman for Facebook Inc.'s messaging application WhatsApp told Reuters that WhatsApp would introduce its voice and video calling option on the desktop next year.
WhatsApp video conferencing will compete with the big video conferencing services like Zoom and Google Meet.
However, it is not yet clear if WhatsApp wants to compete with Zoom and Google Meet.
WhatsApp has more than two billion users worldwide and is commonly used for personal phone calls. Zoom and Google Meet are not used for personal phone calls.
WhatsApp is a desktop video call service provided to some users as an experiment. The move was first reported by the technology blog Web Beta Info.
In the first wave of the Carona virus, when offices closed and people restricted their office, and personal activities at their homes, Zoom and Google Meet's popularity skyrocketed. From office work to wedding ceremonies, everything was zooming in.
Now people are continuing to do this even during the second wave of the virus.
On Friday, Zoom Video Communications Inc. said it was lifting a 40-minute ban on free-running accounts for the current holiday season.
Similarly, Google Meet has said that its free service users can talk for more than 60 minutes till March.
